The answer depends less upon which product is ‘best’ and rather more upon what you are growing and how you intend to grow it.

It is our general-purpose Coir Potting Mix, suitable for a wide variety of indoor and outdoor growing. The compressed format is particularly convenient: add water, allow it to expand and loosen it thoroughly before use.

Our 5kg brick, for example, produces approximately 80 litres when fully expanded and prepared.

Coir Vital Grow® is a useful choice for gardeners who prefer greater control over how their plants are fed, rather than necessarily starting with a growing medium containing a predetermined feeding programme.

Coir Plus® – when you want added nutrition

Sometimes convenience is the priority.

Coir Plus® combines coir with added nutrients, including NPK fertiliser, creating an all-purpose growing medium for gardeners who would rather begin with nutrition already incorporated.

This makes it particularly useful when planting vegetables, flowers and other container-grown plants where you want the benefits of a coir-based growing medium without starting with plain coir and managing everything separately from the outset.

There are occasions when plants need more than an initial helping hand.

CoirPlus® Advance has been developed with slow-release nutrition, making it particularly useful where a more gradual supply of nutrients is desirable.

This can make sense for plants that will remain in their containers for a longer growing period, rather than crops or plants being raised for only a short time.

Coir Nutri® – for plants with a healthy appetite

Some plants are simply hungrier than others.

A tomato plant carrying a substantial crop has rather different requirements from a tray of young seedlings. The same can be said of many vigorously growing vegetables and flowering plants.

Coir Nutri® is intended for situations where plant nutrition is a particularly important part of the growing programme.

It is a useful option for gardeners who like the physical qualities of coir but want a growing medium developed with productive plant growth in mind.

Indoor gardening brings its own peculiar set of challenges.

Houseplants spend months, and sometimes years, in containers. They need a growing medium capable of providing a sensible balance around the roots without becoming excessively dense over time.

Coir provides the principal growing structure, whilst biochar adds a porous carbon-rich component to the blend. It is an interesting option for gardeners who want to move beyond a conventional single-material growing medium and explore a more considered formulation.

Rather than adding ingredients simply because they happen to be fashionable, however, we always recommend choosing a growing medium according to the plant and the conditions in which it will be grown.

Best suited to: indoor and outdoor container growing where a coir-and-biochar formulation is preferred.

What about Coir & Perlite?

Another useful combination is coir and perlite.

Perlite is widely used in horticultural growing media to create additional air spaces and help produce a lighter, more open structure.

A coir and perlite blend can therefore be particularly useful where aeration and drainage around the root zone are priorities.

It can work particularly well for propagation, container growing and plants that dislike sitting in an overly dense growing medium.

Best suited to: propagation, pots and plants where a particularly open growing structure is desirable.

So, which one should you buy?

There is no need to make the decision unnecessarily complicated.

If you want a versatile starting point, choose Coir Vital Grow®. If you want added fast-release nutrition, look at Coir Plus®. For slower feeding over a longer period, consider CoirPlus® Advance. For more nutritionally demanding growing, Coir Nutri® may be the better fit.

For houseplants, there is DomusCoir®. If you specifically want a coir and biochar formulation, consider CharoGaia®. And where additional aeration is particularly important, Coir & Perlite provides another useful option.

The important thing is not to assume that every bag containing coir is essentially the same.
