1. How do I rehydrate a coir potting mix block or brick?Place the block in a container largest enough to expand, and slowly add luke warm water. Let it absorb for 15–30 minutes. Fluff with your hands or a tool. If using your hands, it’s advised to wear a pair of gloves. 

2. How much water do I need to rehydrate a coir block?A 650g brick will require around 5 – 6 L of water and more if needed. 

A 5kg block typically needs 18–25 litres of water to fully expand. More if required can be added.

3. Do I need to add nutrients to coir potting mix?
Yes. Coir is inert and contains no nutrients. It works best when combined with fertilisers or nutrient rich compost. Since coir is an organic product, we always recommend to use an organic fertiliser. 

4. How do I grow seeds in coir?Use coir discs or bricks/blocks/bags and mix in a seed tray. Moisten, plant your seeds, and keep the environment warm and bright. 

5. Can I mix coir with compost or other soil?Yes. Mixing coir with compost or topsoil improves texture, water retention, and aeration.

6. What plants grow best in coir potting mix?
Most plants do well in coir potting mix vegetables, herbs, flowers, and houseplants. Tomatoes, lettuce, basil, and succulents thrive in it.

  1. Coir Blocks & Bricks What size coir block should I buy? It depends on your growing space and needs. A 5kg block expands to around 80 litres of coir potting mix, ideal for raised beds or large containers. Smaller bricks (650g) are great for houseplants, balcony gardens, or indoor starts and they produce around 10L of coir potting mix. If you want smaller items, we got a range of discs that come as 4cm (10ml), 5cm (250ml), 7.5cm (500ml), 10cm (1L), 13cm (3L) and 18cm (8L). 
  2. How much volume will I get from a 5kg block? A 5kg coir block typically yields 80 litres of hydrated fluffy coir potting mix. 
  3. Can I break a coir block into smaller portions? Yes, you can saw or chip off a portion from a dry block, but it’s easier to rehydrate the whole block and store what you don’t immediately use. 
  4. Coir Coins/Discs How do coir coins(R) work for seed starting? Coir coins(R) expand with water and create the perfect moisture retentive base for seeds. Just add water, insert your seed, and place in a warm spot.
  5. Do I need a seed tray with coir coins(R)? It’s helpful but not essential. A tray helps collect excess water and keeps things tidy, especially indoors.
  6. Are coir coins(R) biodegradable in the soil? Yes, they break down naturally in the soil and can be planted directly without disturbing the roots. So in short, they are 100% biodegradable.

  7. Is coir potting mix or coco coir or coco peat the same as compost? No, coir is not a compost. Coir, also known as coco coir or coco peat, is a natural growing medium made from the fibrous husk of coconuts. It contains no decomposed organic matter like compost does. While compost is biologically active and nutrient-rich from the breakdown of plant materials, coir is an inert, pH-balanced medium that retains moisture well but has minimal nutrients. Coir is often used with compost or fertilisers to support healthy plant growth, but on its own, it does not serve the same function as compost. So be careful if someone is saying it’s compost, it’s possibly just for marketing purposes.  Which is misleading the consumer. That’s why we are clear that coir is not a compost, but just a potting mix.
