Summer is always an exciting and rewarding time for growers and gardeners. Your gardens will soon be packed with an array of colours, scents, and insects, but there is still lots to do to keep your gardens flourishing throughout the season.

It will soon be time to harvest fruits and vegetables, with all your hard work over the winter and spring months beginning to pay off. Some vegetables can be harvested early, while others are harvested mid- to late-summer. Early sown salad crops and early potatoes should be ready for harvesting, while peas, carrots, radishes, and broad beans are also among those that can be harvested. Depending on what you have sown, you might end up with an abundance of vegetables, so think about how you might want to preserve them, such as through freezing.

While summer is great for plants and flowers, you might also spot those unwanted weeds growing in your garden. Try mulching to deter the weeds or removing them as they appear. At CoirProducts, our natural, biodegradable, and peat-free mulch mats can help block sunlight and stop those unsightly weeds from growing and destroying your crop. With a range of distinct sizes to choose from, they are ideal for use in a variety of settings.

With the temperatures rising, it’s important to provide your plants with adequate water. Early mornings and late evenings are often seen as the best time to water the plants, while it’s still a little cool. Do your research to learn more about the requirements of each plant and how often you need to water them. What’s great about coir-based products is that it retains water and moisture well, as well as having excellent drainage properties, which is especially beneficial for the healthy development of plant roots.

While pruning may be done in the colder months when plants are more dormant, careful pruning in the summer can also have its benefits, especially in helping to avoid diseases, boost fruit production, and improve the plant’s overall shape and structure. Early summer is also ideal to prune those spring flowering shrubs. Prune off growth that has finished flowering as well as any damaged branches within the shrubs. With climbing plants, prune the trailing stems. Trimming those annuals and perennials, as necessary, can help maximise impact.

And remember to open those doors and vents in your greenhouse or polytunnel as necessary… the hot weather can be too much for plants!

At CoirProducts, we have a range of natural and peat-free growing media to help you prepare for the seasons ahead. Our unique coir bundles are also ideal whether you are a seasoned grower or new to gardening. With plenty to choose from, there is something for everyone!
