Do you plan ahead when it comes to gardening or growing? August is a great time for thinking about preparing your garden for the season ahead. From dead-heading plants to adding those Autumn flowering bulbs, there is plenty to look forward to. Read on for some tips and suggestions on what you can do in your gardens in late summer.

Keep feeding and watering your plants

Continue to feed and water your plants adequately, so that they will flourish well into autumn.

Remove dead heads

Remember to prune those trees and shrubs, and remove dead heads and branches. This will help your flowers, shrubs, and small trees continue growing well into late autumn. Also, tidy up perennials, this will help prevent self-seeding, while also making the space look tidier.

Adding autumn flowers

Think about what autumn flowers you want to introduce to your garden. Autumn flowering bulbs can be planted in late summer, to enjoy the best display of colours in the season ahead. Autumn flowering crocus are always a popular choice! You can plant some in pots, or under trees, or in groups in the grass.

If starting off planting in pots, CoirProducts coir pots are the perfect alternative to plastic pots. Coming in a distinct range of sizes and unique bundles, our coir pots can be used indoors or outdoors. Once the plant grows bigger, the plant can be placed on the ground with the pot itself, meaning there is no transplanting shock.

Planting autumn vegetables

August is the perfect time to sow those autumn vegetables. Spinach and radishes are some of those easy-to-grow crops that can tolerate cooler temperatures and a light frost. They will be ready to harvest before the severe winter.

At CoirProducts, our natural, biodegradable, and peat-free coir potting mix comes in a variety of sizes of blocks, bricks, and discs, and are a versatile growing media. We also have a distinct range of CoirProducts coircoins that are ideal for sowing and are known for their high germination rates. Plants grown in our coicoins can be easily replanted without any shock once it grows, while the coircoins degrade into the soil over time. Our growing media are easy-to-use, and have a neutral pH value. Coir retains water and moisture well, which helps plants develop strong and healthy root systems.

Protecting empty vegetable patches

Once you’ve harvested your crops in August, you’ll find some empty space in your vegetable garden. Cover these empty areas to help protect these spaces from the growth of weeds. CoirProducts mulch mats are ideal to help prevent the growth of unwanted weeds. Our mulch mats come in a variety of sizes ranging from 12cm to 50cm, and are completely natural, biodegradable, and peat-free.

And lastly…

While there is plenty to keep you busy in the late summer, don’t forget to enjoy your garden. Take a moment to celebrate those little gardening successes, enjoy the fresh air, and connect with nature.
