Larger volumes to suit varied growing needs
The coir potting mix range offered by CoirProducts include coco peat blocks (5kg) and coco peat bricks (300g and 650g). Also included in this range are CoirProducts coir discs, which come in a variety of sizes, ranging from 50mm-100mm. To use CoirProducts coco peat blocks, bricks, or discs, you need to add a sufficient amount of water and let the mix expand. The 5kg block provides approximately 70L in volume of potting mix when expanded, while the 650g brick provides approximately 10L in volume.

Peat free coir peat!
It is easy to get confused when it comes to the term, ‘coco peat’! After all, shouldn’t a name say it all? Coco peat came to be called so back in the mid 20th Century. In 1949, E. P. Hume wrote an article in a journal called, Economic Botany, explaining the process of extracting fibres from the coconut husk, which are then used to make a variety of products. He notes a by-product of this process was “a mass of tiny, brown, irregularly shaped particles”, resembling a sort of ‘coir dust’. Hume goes on to write how the term ‘dust’ would imply certain undesirable qualities and also had little linkages with coconut. Instead, this ‘coir dust’ like particles looked similar to horticultural peat, and hence he suggests an alternative term, ‘cocopeat’. Hume goes on to recognise the uses of cocopeat for mulching, soil conditioning, and propagation, as well as noting its high water and moisture holding capacities.
As the UK government announced the ban of peat in horticulture, given the negative impacts on people and ecosystems in extracting peatlands, there has been renewed interest in the use of coir as an alternative.
