Section 3: How to Use Coir Products

1. How do I rehydrate a coir potting mix block or brick?
Place the block in a container largest enough to expand, and slowly add luke warm water. Let it absorb for 15–30 minutes. Fluff with your hands or a tool. If using your hands, it’s advised to wear a pair of gloves.

2. How much water do I need to rehydrate a coir block?
A 650g brick will require around 5 – 6 L of water and more if needed.

A 5kg block typically needs 18–25 litres of water to fully expand. More if required can be added.

Coir discs – each disc will require adequate water based on the discs size to expand. Check out the how to use guides for each.

3. Do I need to add nutrients to coir potting mix?
Yes. Coir is inert and contains no nutrients. It works best when combined with fertilisers or nutrient-rich compost. Since coir is an organic product, we always recommend to use an organic fertiliser.

4. How do I grow seeds in coir?
Use coir discs or bricks/blocks/bags and mix in a seed tray. Moisten, plant your seeds, and keep the environment warm and bright.

5. Can I mix coir with compost or other soil?
Yes. Mixing coir with compost or topsoil improves texture, water retention, and aeration.

6. What plants grow best in coir potting mix?
Most plants do well in coir potting mix —vegetables, herbs, flowers, and houseplants. Tomatoes, lettuce, basil, and succulents thrive in it.

7. Can I use coir potting mix for indoor plants?
Yes. Coir potting mix is great for indoor plants as it retains moisture and provides good drainage. We also recommend to use CharoGaia, DomusCoir or EchoCharisma.

8. Can I grow vegetables with coir potting mix?
Absolutely. Coir is ideal for growing vegetables like tomatoes, peppers, lettuce, and cucumbers.

9. How do I use coir in raised beds or planters?
Mix coir into the topsoil or compost layer of your raised bed to improve drainage and structure.

10. Can coir be used in hydroponics?
Yes. Washed and buffered coir potting mix is widely used in hydroponic systems. One of the main products used for this is our Coir growbags.

11. Is coir pH neutral?
Yes. Coir has a near-neutral pH (5.5–6.8), making it suitable for a wide range of plants.

12. How do I store unused coir products?
Store in a dry place away from moisture and direct sunlight. Once rehydrated, keep moist but well-drained.

13. Can I use coir for cuttings and propagation?
Yes. Coir’s fine texture and water retention make it excellent for rooting cuttings. We also recommend using the CoirCoins or Growcubes.
